This is certainly a list for the ages as these amazing songs have shaped many of our lives no matter what your age. Whether it’s themes from classic movies, holiday songs that we all know the words to and many others that we get goose bumps from listening to, you will quickly become nostalgic as the list spans nearly the entire past century with each song carrying a different message for all listener genres. Unfortunately it is a difficult decision to make with so many songs that could qualify as a Top 10 contender. Even a Top 100 list would not be complete due to so many songs out there.

This list has so much variety that it will make a great addition to your collection and may work well for a huge New Years Eve party or possible 50th reunion or costume party. Make sure to play these songs remembering that many of them have influenced our lives and how music today.

Over The Rainbow-Judy Garland

This is one of the songs that everyone will associate with Dorothy skipping down the Yellow Brick Road in “The Wizard of Oz.” This song actually slows down the pace of skipping the Yellow Brick Road and looks into a bright future. Just hear the lyrics a few times and you’ll make your own place with this amazing song of our time.

As Time Goes By-Dooley Wilson

Dooley Wilson’s “As Time Goes By” is one of the greatest songs from the Golden Era of music. Flashing back to the 1940’s, this slow but meaningful hit describes life ‘going by’ and how we can’t help but wish our lives away. This song is surely one of the greatest hits of all time and chances are you’ve heard it in commercials and other advertising segments in past years.

Singin In The Rain-Gene Kelly

Not only was Gene Kelly and his oldie but goodie “Singin’ in the Rain”, a classic from the Golden Era of music but he was also known for his dancing. It won’t be a surprise for some of us to actually hum the words to this hit while dancing with a favorite mop handle during a thunderstorm. You’ll quickly agree that this one makes the Top 10 Songs list without a doubt.

Moon River-Audrey Hepburn

Though the movie, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a classic in is own and is probably already on a Top 10 list for that category, Audrey Hepburn is definitely one of the original Hollywood Sweethearts. “Moonriver” is one of those classic songs that you’ll love hearing over and over and inspire you to rent or own the movie from which it is famous.

White Christmas-Bing Crosby

This is by far my parent’s favorite holiday song but over the years, I’ve realized that the attitudes toward Christmas have changed throughout society’s ever faster pace but listening to this reminds me of when life was simpler and important times in Christianity such as Christmas makes this an enjoyable song. This is actually a good song long after the holiday season is over.

Mrs. Robinson-Simon & Garfunkel

Many youngsters today have probably heard this great late 1960’s hit and may even know the words to the “T” but I would not be surprised if they hadn’t seen the movie ‘The Graduate’ with a young faced Dustin Hoffman and gorgeous Catherine Ross. This is a favorite Simon & Garfunkel hit that everyone loves and its no wonder it made it to the Top 10.

When You Wish Upon A Star-Cliff Edwards

Of course after seeing Pinocchio umpteen times growing up, I quickly got used to this song “When You Wish Upon A Star” and realized how powerful it is beyond the animated movie. We’ve all heard this classic Disney hit throughout our lives in other settings and it is even the last song in the final minutes of movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” It is definitely one for the al time archive songs.

The Way We Were-Barbra Streisand

The movie soundtrack and the movie “The Way We Were” itself complimented each other in the mid 1970’s making this one of the greatest love story movies of all time. This is a song that has been played at many class reunions, weddings and anniversaries and with a lyric line of “Memories like the corners of my mind…” you want to cherish this one for years to come.

Stayin Alive-The Bee Gees

Known for the theme from the movie “Saturday Night Fever”, the Bee-Gee’s were put on the map with this late 1970’s disco mega hit. This upbeat tune is still highly requested at a variety of venues, ranging from dance halls to sporting events. You may want to watch the movie again to really get into the disco groove.

The Sound of Music-Julie Andrews

Ahh the grassy meadow surrounded by the majestic Austrian Alps with a energetic twirling Julie Andrews in pre WWII get-up is a scene that probably everyone on Earth knows by heart. The ‘Hills are Alive’ in this classic song of all time and Julie Andrews sings her best in one of the most popular musicals of all time.
